JOLIET-9407

This year has been epic. Which is one way of explaining why I haven’t updated this place for a while. My business has taken off, I’m shooting all the time, I’m having to say no to jobs, something I thought would never happen. I’m so grateful. I’m getting to travel, I’m working with really talented people, I have a rep! And also I am tired. And in the throes of expanding my business and figuring out what I want the next chapter to look like.

I just got back from a trip down to my dad’s house in baja. The trip helped me slow down and pull focus on what makes me feel good, not just what makes me efficient. And I miss sharing bits about my life here. So many of you have been with me since I was only a blogger, when I booked my first New York Times job and then when I started really making a living as a photographer.

This is also the only place (well, besides instagram) that I have total control over my images and have the freedom to share outtakes, fun moments, mistakes etc. It’s also a place where I can rest for a second and be thoughtful. So I’m going to post a little more often. I want to share some of the things I’ve done this year: places I’ve gone, things I’ve shot. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and want to make sure I acknowledge that journey for myself instead of getting wrapped up too badly in the day to day anxieties and unknowns.

But if you don’t hear from me, you can always check my instagram feed.

the year in bensimons

Tuesday, January 7th, 2014

A little nod to my favorite shoe and big part of my shoot uniform, the slip on bensimon. I’ve worn them since I was a little girl and recently they’ve taken me all over the place. Some of the spots we’ve gone together (all from my instagram): San Francisco, Mexico, Hawaii, Boston, New York, the desert, Vegas, Portland, Paris, Provence, on my daily walks and all over LA. (Follow me on instagram!) Here’s to more travel for everyone in 2014.

And for good measure, a couple of candids of yours truly thanks to Michelle Pullman.

p.s. Me on the left with my cousins climbing the gate of a medieval castle in france, bensimons in place.

If you’re in paris, buy bensimons at Autour du Monde, otherwise in LA you can find them at Poketo and Individual Medley and online at Madewell. Also, totally wasn’t paid for this.

Epic travel recently including a 36 hour trip to honolulu. I was up before the sun both days and it was so quiet and full of magic. I tried to soak up every second of it. Find me on instagram to see this all unfold in real time. @ljoliet.

Spectacular 3 day get away. Rainy on the way up, like this the whole drive back. Just magic.

art book stand / book club at griffith park

Wednesday, September 4th, 2013

Claire Cottrell and Jordan Sullivan’s art book stand / book club popped up quietly on saturday afternoon in a cedar grove in griffith park and was, honestly, magic. The heat gave way to a California golden hour and the walk back down gave us views and inspiration for days. The stands themselves offered unusual/hard to find art books/zines/posters hand picked by people who love images, who love art.

Was thrilled to get to meet some internet friends in person: Dario! Lili! And to hang out with some faves. Hamish and Andi of vacation days. The loveliest Lauren and Claire.

Also, made me want to make images I can hold in my hand.

Thanks to Tracy and Scout Regalia for the great company.

Portland

Didn’t take my camera out for much in portland, except for a visit to a friend’s farm where everything was happy. The real highlight for me were all the camera-less day trips to various rivers (here and here) and maybe also this giant fern and all the beautiful roses.

Some photos from summer so far. All from my phone. (Who wants to carry a big camera around all the time?). Some of these are on instagram. Most of them have a vsco filter on them. Highights include the re-opening of echo park lake, evening drinks and dinner at Laura’s, Claire and her yellow bike, hang outs, afternoon light hitting palm trees, hands in sun, the sun kept at bay, the beach.

I’m heading to portland this weekend (get in touch if you’re around!). Follow my instagram for the latest.

Also, I’m slowly re-working my portfolio which means endless editing of work that currently isn’t in my portfolio. Here’s a little peek (you have to push play!).

Some things:
I can’t get enough of Daniel’s renovations.
Claire offers a window into a different kind of traveling.
A creative compound I shot for the NY Times
Music I’m listening to.
The crepe recipe I use (beer!).
Love everything happening at Vacation Days.
Summer flowers.

summertime

Just 6 months ago I was on a road trip with Ben and Makoto of Scout Regalia across the southwest. We shot this amazing project of theirs in Snowmass over new years and then crossed through Moab, Monument Valley, the Painted Desert, Navajo Nation, the Grand Canyon and Route 66 through Joshua Tree and back home to LA.

On that trip I had so many thoughts and dreams for what this new year would look like. So much hope and possibility. So many lists. So much feeling.

It was one of the best road trips I’ve ever been on, maybe only because I love Ben and Makoto so much. But also because of the sense of possibility that any trip will usually bring.

It’s summertime now. I’m looking at the half of the year that has passed. What’s happened? No less than half a dozen road trips. Other trips. So many projects with people I love and admire. So many pots on the stove. So much possibility.

And now I’m in the throes of updating my portfolio to represent more of where I am now. It’s been 3 years since the last time I updated it. And I’m filled with wonder. So much has happened. I’ve made so many friends through this crazy internet world. Learned so much about myself. Made so many photographs. And now it’s time to distill that all down to help point me to what’s next.

See more photos from this trip and more day to day stuff (including some fun projects) over on instagram, I’m @ljoliet.

east coast

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

Some highlights from a walk in the charles river peninsula just outside of boston. I spent a couple days in the area after my trip to new york and did very very little outside of relaxing, watching some garbage tv and taking this spectacular walk. We saw turtles, baby turtles, a nest of eggs, an old rail line, and lots and lots of reflections. I missed bougainvillea, of course, but the east coast made up for it in spades by offering up some beautiful rhodedendrons:
