I recently got to shoot a second lookbook for the brilliantly talented Tracy Wilkinson (see the first one here). She expanded her empire with a bunch of new tees in different cuts and colors and also the easiest breeziest dresses that I can’t wait to live in all summer.
We had such a fun time walking around the neighborhood and shooting. Our model, the beautiful Laura Taylor is also a super talented photographer and was a total dream to shoot.
You can find Tracy this weekend at Shopclass, she’s the guest artist for May.
Last year I had the pleasure of working with Matt Monroe and his lovely wife, Jen. We shot Matt’s entire line of handcrafted furniture in their amazing Atwater workshop. He takes so much pride in his work that it more than borders on perfectionism, in the best possible way. His work is impeccable, grand and beautiful. Plus everything is made in LA. My favorites are the Seawall coffee table, the Independence Desk and the Haverhill Rocker. A special thanks to the talented Sarah Rainwater, who did all of their graphic design, for introducing us!
It’s April in Los Angeles. Life is pretty good, if a little busy. These two shots are from one of the homes I shot last week for Barbara Bestor (dreams are happening). All the houses were on the east side, this one on a hill in Silver Lake with citrus trees going crazy. And the other picture? Well that’s Michelle Pullman, my assistant, my friend, a great photographer, the strongest person I know. I wouldn’t be able to do half the stuff I do without her. So that’s her, about 8 feet behind me minding my tether. Thanks Michelle!
I’m heading up to San Francisco for the next week for a handful of shoots. Follow me on instagram for updates on the road.
And for fun, I’ve started making playlists of what I listen to the most in a month. It’s partly to help differentiate the months from one another and it also forces me to listen to new things. This is the music that got me through March.
As I hinted a couple weeks ago, I recently collaborated with my friend, and braid maven, Alison Brislin on a braid lookbook! We got to work with the beautiful and enigmatic Cheryl Nichols (look at this beauty) as our braid model for the day in an awesome location in Mt Washington. It was refreshing to step outside of what I usually shoot, take the camera off the tripod and have some fun. Special thanks to my favorite Kate Miss for designing the lookbook and generally being awesome.
I’m still catching up from yet another road trip (this time back out to Joshua Tree for a camping trip that did not include the internet). I came home to find that quite a few recent shoots all hit the internet at once. Wanted to share some highlights before I forget!
I love shooting for Remodelista because I so often get to cover the places I go in real life. This time I shot Cortez, one of my favorite local restaurants. See the whole post here.
Otherwild recently moved into my neighborhood and I was so happy to get a chance to cover it for Pitchfork’s Journal, Nothing Major. They carry a great selection of locally made goods plus fun stuff from Portland and beyond. Now they’re right here on Echo Park Ave. (P.S. that poster is one of my favorites).
I have more to share, but this will have to do for the weekend!
This year is becoming the year of the road trip and I’m not complaining. A quick jaunt up the 5 this past weekend to San Francisco yielded miles and miles and miles of blossoming trees at sunset. Couldn’t have been more beautiful.
Highlights lacking photo evidence: starting our book club book, eating breakfast at st. francis where they have a bougainvillea cocktail (that I didn’t try but still…), checked out the new muji store, ate dinner at bar agricole (where everything is amazing and you have to have their old fashioned served in the thinnest most delicate glass you’ve ever seen) and saw a great show. Also I want to thank the future for allowing me to stream an episode of Nashville from the back of a moving vehicle on the 5 freeway onto my phone in present day time.
One of my intentions for the new year was to keep going down my path of shooting interiors and architecture, refine my process, get better, keep going. Another one was to push myself ever so slightly in new directions that might scare me a little. So I’ve been shooting things that move. Like people. And now I’m going to share a little. I’m really proud of work that I shot recently for Alison Brislin and her amazing braids. I’ll reveal the full shoot soon, but for now, it’s pretty fun to see one of the shots in her promo material (designed by Kate Miss) that she’ll be using at this weekend’s Cream Event. (Also I’ll be there as a braid model, if you’re there please say hello! This is me.)
After a lot of traveling and the flu, I arrive back at the same resting place; los angeles is the best place.
Outtakes from a recent NY Times shoot are up top–a mid century gem in encino, a couple photos from a party this past weekend at my favorite house (I even got dressed up for it), and a couple things I picked up at this weekend’s LA Art Book Fair which was enormously overwhelming and inspiring since I’m thinking about printing things that you can hold in your hand and put on your wall. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Ye Rink Mok and thought the Book Stand booth was really stellar.
Recently had the pleasure of shooting with Tracy Wilkinson in my favorite house that has ever existed. Tracy just launched a new online shop with Simon Story where they sell the things they make (Simon’s speakers are getting a lot of traction).
