new york times t magazine stories

Wednesday, August 6th, 2014

I’ve been collaborating with Alissa Walker for the last year and a half on a bunch of stories about LA people/places for the New York Times T Magazine. It’s fun discovering new things about this city and also celebrating its history. I also just really love working with Alissa on our pitches and things we’re noticing. We have a lot of fun together. I’ve also been assigned a couple of stories on my own. Here are some recent stories we’ve collaborated on and a couple I just shot:

The opening of Night Market Song in Silver Lake. The east side finally got some fiery authentic (sometimes weird) thai food. Alissa and I got to go and taste everything for research and it was amazing. it’s a local favorite now:

A place in my neighborhood that I just adore, Ouli. It’s a tiny shop in Echo Park run by the sweetest most design savvy people and I love seeing them thrive.

The revamping of the San Vicente Bungalows. Jeff Klein, the hotelier behind the Sunset Tower in Hollywood, has bought the old bungalows and has grand plans for revamping this oasis in the middle of the city.

Lombardi House, a recently redone Victorian house in the heart of Hollywood is now a great event space along with a place to stay:

new work: Heirloom + Poketo for T Magazine

Sunday, October 27th, 2013

I recently started collaborating with Alissa on a series of stories for the new york times T Magazine. I’m really proud of these stories because 1) it means collaborating with Alissa, a friend and a writer whom I admire, 2) we’re covering very east side LA specific people and businesses which fills me with LA pride.

The most recent story is about another collaboration: between catering and party planning masters, Heirloom LA and style mavens and shop owners, Poketo and the street food event they threw recently. Read the whole story here.

Making my way through the archive of jobs I’ve shot over the last 4 years and rediscovering things I forgot I ever shot.

new work: the plant whisperer for the new york times

Saturday, September 7th, 2013

Recent work for the New York Times had me photographing Mileece, a plant whisperer of sorts who makes music out of plants, lives in an airstream, bathes outside and has performed at MOMA. Her home was a wonderland, see all the pictures and read the article on the NY Times.

Check out some other stories I’ve shot for the New York Times:

A personal design hero in LA
This creative compound (and lively inhabitants) in Santa Monica
A landscape designer in Los Feliz
This coop in Berlin
This interior photographer (and his amazing modern home) in Los Angeles
This outsider artist in Palm Springs

See other recent work in Anthology, Nothing Major, T Magazine, Lonny, Cup of Jo and design love fest.

art book stand / book club at griffith park

Wednesday, September 4th, 2013

Claire Cottrell and Jordan Sullivan’s art book stand / book club popped up quietly on saturday afternoon in a cedar grove in griffith park and was, honestly, magic. The heat gave way to a California golden hour and the walk back down gave us views and inspiration for days. The stands themselves offered unusual/hard to find art books/zines/posters hand picked by people who love images, who love art.

Was thrilled to get to meet some internet friends in person: Dario! Lili! And to hang out with some faves. Hamish and Andi of vacation days. The loveliest Lauren and Claire.

Also, made me want to make images I can hold in my hand.

Thanks to Tracy and Scout Regalia for the great company.

new work: T Magazine

Friday, August 30th, 2013

Teamed up this week with the talented Alissa Walker who wrote up the brand new Moon Juice Shop in Silver Lake for T Magazine. I shot the photos and tasted all the things. And I totally approve. See and read the whole thing on T Magazine.

Some photos from summer so far. All from my phone. (Who wants to carry a big camera around all the time?). Some of these are on instagram. Most of them have a vsco filter on them. Highights include the re-opening of echo park lake, evening drinks and dinner at Laura’s, Claire and her yellow bike, hang outs, afternoon light hitting palm trees, hands in sun, the sun kept at bay, the beach.

I’m heading to portland this weekend (get in touch if you’re around!). Follow my instagram for the latest.

Also, I’m slowly re-working my portfolio which means endless editing of work that currently isn’t in my portfolio. Here’s a little peek (you have to push play!).

Some things:
I can’t get enough of Daniel’s renovations.
Claire offers a window into a different kind of traveling.
A creative compound I shot for the NY Times
Music I’m listening to.
The crepe recipe I use (beer!).
Love everything happening at Vacation Days.
Summer flowers.

new work: shirley kurata for nothing major

Friday, June 28th, 2013

Catching up on some recent work (from 3 months ago, yikes!) that I did for Nothing Major’s new journal (they’re the visual arm of Pitchfork). I spent the afternoon with Mike and Dean and Martha and we collaborated on this interview and home shoot with uber stylist Shirley Kurata. The day was sunny, involved champagne and good friends. Thanks Mike and Dean for making it happen!

Read the whole interview and more photos over on Nothing Major.

#bougainvillea

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

I’m finally back home after trips to new york and boston, big bear and palm springs. So much I want to download (especially my experience at CAMP which was just…incredible) and I will get to it all soon.

First I wanted to announce that inspired by CAMP, Alissa Walker and I are collaborating on a new project. The details will be rolled out shortly but for now know that it involves our love for bougainvillea: that wild, thorny, boisterous vine that explodes its colors all over this city (and many many others).

We’d love for you to participate. So all you Angelenos, please hash tag all your bougainvillea photos with #bougainvillea and make sure your geo tagging is turned on.

And if you don’t already, start following us on instagram! I’m @ljoliet and Alissa is @awalkerinla.
